Much of the poor in the Philippines live in rural areas. They don't have to be poor. They certainly don't have to be hungry. There are much land, but hardly used. Instead, the poor move to the cities for marginal jobs, leaving their family and community behind. Creating dysfunction and further depression. With little farming knowledge and lots of hard work, they can be self-sufficient through the cheapest and earliest proven way: gardening and farming. Philippines is ideal for this because it rains a lot and the sun shines a lot also.
